Lesson 6.0: What is the Difference between
an Equation and an Inequality?
We learned about equations in Unit 2. An equation is a powerful statement. An equation is a mathematical sentence that states that something is exactly equal to something else:
An inequality is a mathematical sentence that states two things are NOT equal. If two things are not equal, one must be greater or less than the other.
A number m is less than 4.
A number x is greater or equal to negative seven.
x ≥ (-7)
x ≥ (-7)
