Unit 4
The Coordinate Plane
The Coordinate Plane
Notebook:
The coordinate plane is a set of two (or more) number lines that intersect at their zero points.
Let's start with a point in space. We call this point the origin.
We make a horizontal number line with that point as the zero mark. We will call this the x-axis.
We take a vertical number line and intersect them at their zero mark. We call the horizontal number line the x-axis and the vertical number line the y-axis.
Classwork & Homework:
Draw a beautiful coordinate system in your notebook. Be as accurate and precise as you can.
Let's create a coordinate system of our notebooks. I will hand out random coordinates and we will create a coordinate system in this room.
What does the word origin mean to you? What does it mean in math class?
Can you think of any ideas that a coordinate plane would be useful in your life? Brainstorm 5 reasons.
